Aurora Borealis

Aurora Borealis

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

It's on my bucket list as is penning a reasonable sonnet. I don't try these often.

"
In close cupped hands I hold a golden wish,
I kiss my thumbs, set free so it might fly.
My wish to gaze enchanted in the nights
by spirits as they dance across the sky
I'd marvel at the sight of Northern Lights
that sashay softly, swirl and glow bright green.
And then pinch-pleated curtains made from silk
that roll effusing hues of purple sheen.
Aurora, Roman Goddess of the dawn,
bring forth your lavish riches don't be shy.
Grant me one boon to kneel in front of you
and witness this first hand before I die.

Enrich my soul, delight me I implore,
don't leave me disappointed wanting more.

The northern lights are so daringly beautiful,
such magnificent and sweet description,
keep up the great inks!

You're welcome Anne :)
Chris I can thoroughly endorse your wish to see the Northern Lights. Obviously there are no promises. We saw them, but pretty static green was all we got. I hope you're extra lucky and see the pinch-pleated rolling curtains! We've been to Lapland twice and just adored the whole experience both times, so the modest light appearance wasn't that big a deal. We booked with a small organisation that took us nightly from our accommodation to locations where they had been recently spotted. We didn't fancy the possible 2am wake-up call and it worked for us. But then on a separate holiday in Iceland, some folk went on a speculative night-trip from Reykjavik and had a wonderful sighting only a few miles from the city. There's no telling! I wish you luck.

I think this is a pretty good sonnet. The rhymes seem natural, the right amount of syllables per line, a change in mood in line 9, and a wonderful concluding rhyming couplet at the end. And what a wonderful subject matter ......beautifully portrayed. Definitely more than 'reasonable'. I loved it.

I've always wanted to see the northern lights, but have yet had the pleasure. Your description is vivid and enticing. Perhaps one day. Nice poem indeed.

Chris
you don't leave disappointed with this sonnet...it is more than reasonable...

a little bit at the beginning i tripped over the rhythm of it...but it smoothed out...and had really exceptional visuals...didn't feel like it was forced to the form...felt pretty natural.

I have always been fascinated by the Northern Lights. Your poetry creates the perfect imaging and is a wonderful tribute this glorious phenomenon. It is also a fun word to pronounce, Aurora Borealis.
