Better Left Unpicked

Better Left Unpicked

A Poem by Chris Shaw

Bindweed trumpets in their glory
tell a story of when I,
gazed on pale and fragile petals
underneath an east coast sky.

I was six and from the city,
pretty flowers didn't grow
in the shade of blackened arches
looming over rooms below.

As I picked them at my leisure,
scented pleasure given me,
said my mum, "Admire their beauty,
climbing wild and rambling free"

"Pick them and they'll perish swiftly,
drooping petals, fade and die.
Leave them for the joy of others,
smile on them, then walk on by".

Wise advice given to you by your mother.
"Pick them and they'll perish swiftly,
drooping petals, fade and die.
Leave them for the joy of others,
smile on them, then walk on by".
I taught my grandchildren the same as above. allow nature to live and enjoy. Thank you Chris for sharing the wonderful words and thoughts.

Jeez, you'd get arrested nowadays. Mum was right, let them be for all to admire.
Noses, scabs and wildflowers, DON'T EVER PICK 'EM.
More to reminisce about as we age, sometimes things seen through rose tinted glasses though.
Hi Christine, ain't it nice to have respite from the heat.

i saw Black Eyed Susans in Vermont, but left them there...then went back to the Bronx, to Sedgewick Avenue to where we had two trees on a very long block, nestled on a little square of grass, surrounded by the concrete jungle.
this made me think of that.
what we didn't have we might have wanted...but sometimes it is better just to borrow the moments instead of trying to take them with us.
