A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

call me a witch if yer like but if people can't have children why can't they consider adopting? all kids need loving don't they?

"
you tell me you want children
though you sadly can't conceive
so you cry yourself to sleep at night
while you catch your sobs to breathe

i understand your disappointment
as yet another season passes
but i think you are obsessing
when there are some other answers

but no you are not listening
as your ears are deaf to me
when i tell you all around us
there are young ones who have need

when discarded by their parents
they are looking for a shelter
they are praying to their gods at night
they are looking for an answer

is there someone who can love them
is there someone who can love them
who can offer them a place called home
and a loving family

This hit a nerve for me Christine. Too close to home as my eldest struggles to try to have a family. He and his wife have considered adoption but I guess we all like the idea of our DNA progressing to the next level. Interesting and sensitive piece set in your usual tightly rhymed and metered poem.

I love your very direct way of stating this message -- you are usually straightforward, but this poem is even more so, probably becuz of your strong feelings on the matter. I love it when a writer pours into something that he/she feels strongly. Having been "fixed" at age 20, I got this alot thru-out my life & people thought I wouldn't consider adoption becuz I was hurt by my fate in life. But actually, I was never cut out for kids & as I grew older & people saw how independent I am, they understood my decision about not having kids at all. But if I were to have some, I wouldn't hesitate to adopt. I am pretty gung-ho about adopting homeless pets, too! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Beautifully expressed, as there are so many children who need homes. If you truly have the heart to love them, giving them true love ;-] A parent has many sides and faces to show those lonely ones.

dearest Chris... a beautiful heart that loves children can find love in the Spirit that lives in all of us... it is the bond that brings us together.
Even natural birth parents have to share their love for their child with others... teachers and friends— thereby they will learn to teach others and love others as friends. The Circle of Life is all-encompassing. tenderly, Pat

Adoption has now become a radical notion?
Here, I always thought it was a sensible and caring alternative.
Surrogate motherhood seems a hell of a lot stranger, to me.
In any event, a meaningful, well-done piece of work.

I am adopted and I have adopted many a wayward soul over the years too... many children out there need love (some even when they had parents) I couldn't agree with you more on this one dear Chris:) I never understood that about people that couldn't have children we have no shortage of children in need. My mother fostored quite a few of them when I was growing up. We lived in a big house and it was never empty:)

I loved this poem, and I completely sympathize. It's so sad when people have issues with conceiving however many forget that adoption is a solution and there are so many kids that could benefit from it.

when it comes to children "discarded" is such a sorry word.

yes there are homes and loving families just out there waiting to make a move, and the kids are anticipating, hoping...begging for love.
