They Never Came

They Never Came

A Poem by C. Lee Battaglia
"

I was just experimenting how I felt at the time

"

They Never Came

C. Lee Battaglia

It was raining. The sky was black as coal.

They said they would come.

I am sitting alone at the table getting soaked by the rain.

I don't even notice though because after all they said they would come.

I don’t see anyone.

Alone on this dreadful day.

Because after all they said they would come.

My sister and husband gone,

But they said they would come.

I sat and sat, but they never came.

My blood cold as Ice.

My tears, warm on my cheeks.

The thoughts going threw my head were, ‘They said they would come.’

They are someplace else,

Far, far away.

But I yell, “They said they would come!”

Because after all, they never came.

my first job after I left home was in a state institution for children with severe mental and physical disabilities.. most of the kids I was involved with were not able to express any feelings of being left if they ever even knew.. many had never known any other home.. but there are always a few that do.. I was too young and didn't have enough life experience to consider what your poem talks about.. but you made me remember them.. well done..

I like that even though we know the whole time they aren't coming, the poem still builds.

A interesting poem. Had the feel of mystery and you left a open ending.
