A Mother’s Grief

The death of a child

For a Mother is never mild

At night she wakes up in a panic

Realizing her child’s life

Has ended in a way that was tragic

Tears roll down her face

When she remembers him playing chase

No matter what age the

Child is when they die

A Mother will always endlessly cry

How can this happen to them?

Who is responsible for these demands?

Death is final for this Mom

She’ll never see him grow up to be strong

How can she survive this difficult circumstance?

Now it will be hard to laugh or dance

Joy may at times light up her face

But in her heart there shall

Always be a hollow space

Author's Note

Marie Harrison
My Grandmother used to wake up with terrible nightmares about her son being killed in a car wreck when he was in his 20's. She had these nightmares decades after he had died. I was just remembering her nightmares, that prompted this poem.

A parent should never live to see their child die. Sadly, it does happen. I would be haunted forever. Thank you for sharing this.

Heart-breaking! :((
some tragedies are too painful to get over... Even if we thought for a while that those wounds healed, but once again we'll feel the pain over and over
great write, keep it up

You tug at the heart strings with this sad story.
It breaks my heart that this incident took away
her peace at night forever. It is apparent how badly
you wished to heal her.

"Joy may at times light up her face
But in her heart there shall
Always be a hollow space"
The brevity in these words just leaves awesome suspense behind them. my jaw is agape because this felt a tinge electric. The words are not too fancy and they convey the required message. This is powerful and touching. Truly a Mother's grief

This is so heart breaking and exceedingly poweful. My grandma's first daughter was still born, bless her, and though she never shows it I'm certain she still thinks about her deep down. This is such a great piece, the depth of sadness portrayed here knows no bounds and you've managed to show this greatly. An amazing piece, keep up the good work~

Heart breaking poem.. Its true, mothers, parents keep crying for their kids which maybe now dead or injured badly.. We cry and cry for them, you have bought out the whole message well!

Its so painful when one's parents know their kids were dead, its like.. a heart attack to them, mothers had given all her love to a child and now its dead.. thats too horrible to think of!
Your grandma must be feeling horrible that times, knowing it is already a breaking her hear and the worst, remembering it. Remembering the son she love dies is really terrible. its so.. painful...

Overall, I think its a sad, heart breaking poem with strong feelings inside!
Amazing poem

And your grandmother was surely unable to completely forget the loss of her son.......I know!

My son, Chris was killed in a car accident in 1986 at the age of 16, and it seems as if it was just yesterday too many I have written of his loss and it helps, but the pain is always someone in me!

Life marches on, we heal, we remember, we cry, and we cry, and we cry!

You have captured the pain of her loss with your vivid words! I do hope she was able to have some peace and think of the good times!
We must remember the good of their

Sadly, one who has "been there"
