A Mother’s Grief

The death of a child

For a Mother is never mild

At night she wakes up in a panic

Realizing her child’s life

Has ended in a way that was tragic

Tears roll down her face

When she remembers him playing chase

No matter what age the

Child is when they die

A Mother will always endlessly cry

How can this happen to them?

Who is responsible for these demands?

Death is final for this Mom

She’ll never see him grow up to be strong

How can she survive this difficult circumstance?

Now it will be hard to laugh or dance

Joy may at times light up her face

But in her heart there shall

Always be a hollow space

Author's Note

Marie Harrison
My Grandmother used to wake up with terrible nightmares about her son being killed in a car wreck when he was in his 20's. She had these nightmares decades after he had died. I was just remembering her nightmares, that prompted this poem.

Sad poetry, grief and someone to blame are natural in such circumstances...sad so very sad :O(

It is not pleasant for a child to bury a parent but it is three times worse for a parent to bury a child. We expect that our children will out live us, we expect that they will bury us but when the role is reversed it defies our logic of how things should be. This kind of grief can take joy away from anyone. Nicely written.

oh that sucks! It would be really hard for a parent to outlive their child!!
Beautiful poem though!

This was very heartbreaking, as well as your author's note.
It must be really hard for parents. I lost my parents technically, was adopted because they were such scum. But I often wonder if they care or miss me. So this poem gave me hope.
Thanks you for this write, it really was heartfelt, beautiful, and uplifted me!

I don't have children, but I can only imagine the pain and anguish a mother feels! They never get over they only hope the pain will lessen in time! The flow was marvolous!

I've know people whose children have died and this says it all.
The flow seemed kind on off and I don't know if thats what you were going for but I'm inbetween on how I feel about that rhythm.
"Joy may at times light up her face
But in her heart there shall
Always be a hollow space."
I enjoyed the climax.

This is such a lovely poem. You really show the full impact of what it is like to be a mother who has lost her child. This was very sad but beautifully written.

To lose a child would leave a empty hole forever. There is no words to repair the heart. A very sad poem. I believe the pain make us learn to appreciate the people we love and need around us. A excellent poem. Thank you for sharing.
