Summer Family Reunion

I’m Overwhelmed

Surrounded

By all of you

It’s just too much!

You’re laughing

Talking

Farting

Coughing

Choking

There’s no room for me

Where do I fit in?

The intensity of emotions

Is too high

People aging

People dying

Babies cooing

Chicken frying

I don’t have the right job

Where are my children?

My husband never attends

I love you so much

It’s too hard to say goodbye

Seeing you makes me cry

Why do we all have to die?

Let’s all live forever

I have no control,

Losing myself

Each time one

Of you die,

Oh, how much

I secretly cry

Tables filled with

Fresh vegetables from the garden

Grilled meats and

And tasty fruit pies

Softball games in the sunny fields

Hours of swimming and playing in

The lake or hotel pool

Dancing all night at the disco

Late night pizza runs

Watermelon fighting

Fun with the seeds

The tears

The jokes

The memories

The card games

The long walks on the

Windy dirt roads

With cousins

Oh how I look forward

To these precious moments

With my family each year

Oh how I cherish

These days

We share together

As a family

I like this because it makes me think about someone who's all flustered, doesn't know what to do, and has a million thoughts floating around in their head at once,

Oh goodness love...you have literally voiced all about the family one could! All of the emotions that go hand in hand with the progression of life's trials and errors with a family unit...we can be in a room full of people and still feel alone or a let down...this is excellent! xx

As I read this piece I was there in it all. Being from the same area, we both know this watermelon and those dusty Georgia Red Clay Roads. The fried chicken and the nosy relatives and the sadness we feel at the loss of the ones who are no longer with us. I loved these things as a child because I loved cantaloupe and I was allowed to eat all of it I wanted unlike my siblings who got cut off with the cakes :) Well penned.
