Today

Today

A Poem by Louise Wilson
"

Anyone up for something Up and Peppy?

"
You are a survivor.
Yesterday, a nightmare found your address, and came in person to your door.
It made you cry; It made you ashamed to cry.
It made you need; It made you ashamed to need.
It broke your heart; It left you with the pieces.
It made you wonder how you could ever survive.
But today, you are still here.  You are still here.
And just look at you.
Today you still breathe.
Today your mind still turns.
Today, your eyes open, and I can’t predict what they will see.
I can’t predict what you will see.
Nor what you will do.
Maybe you will wail and gnash your teeth.
Maybe you will wish that the nightmare had dragged you away.
Maybe you will try to forget that it ever happened.
Maybe you will draw an epiphany of heart-rending beauty from your encounter.
And, maybe you will need me.  Maybe not.
Whether or not we ever see each other again, if we come to hate each other, or descend gradually into each other’s oblivion, remember that:
Today, the foremost of all days, you are a survivor.
And tomorrow?  Not our problem.  We belong to today.  Tomorrow is today’s child, and we don’t get paid enough to babysit unwillingly.
Today you live.  Today you are loved.  Today, that which should have broken you, did not.
Today, you are a survivor.
