The Clown

The Clown

A Poem by Hebe

The clown, amidst the crowd,
That's me,
Red nose,
Soaked tissues, a soggy mass next to me.
Painted white circles, around my eyes,
Ghosts from the past, I see them,
Big Frizzy Afro hair
Must have been my finger stuck in some electric outlet,
I needed the jolt, that's how I got the frizz
Baggy pants with patches,
Scars that are sewn into my fabric,
Deep pockets for carrying my big bag of magic
Shattered illusions
Shoes with curled up toes
Accumulated miles of nothing,
Stepping on toes, my clumsy feet, bumping into walls
The best part of all.....
Those big red lips, painted from ear to ear
Frozen in a forever smile
The show must go on
Isn't that what they say......

Hi DCon... yes your right, we do all become the clown at one point or another, maybe that's what we need to push us in a different direction...thank you for your thoughts:)

Completely welcome!:) And in absolute agreement... The best comes out when we feel it!
I really like this. I love clowns anyway for a lot of reasons, but I just love the line about "scars sewn into my fabric". It really goes beyond a simple image of a costume and takes me to a place of honesty; I mean we all wear a costume eventually, we all become the clown at some point. Our costumes are a reflection of our experiences, and our scars are sewn into the fabric. Just lovely.

to keep smiling through the pain of it all...sometimes we must...clowns scare people sometimes, but when we feel as the clown, scariest....

and yes, the make-up to cover up...

My goodness... This is such a powerful little write, Hebe. In truth, I had read it several times simply because each line was utterly brilliant and had...well, surprised me for some unknown reason. I don't think this could have been executed any better than this. Absolutely each line was just captivating, solid in what each shared, in so few words completely hard-hitting and stunning in their mastery. When I had approached the line, "Deep pockets for carrying my big bag of magic..." all that I could think was a breathless, "Wow". Sometimes we stumble upon writings, however fleeting they may be, where it becomes impossible to blink in fear one may miss a word, miss an implication and this definitely is one of those times. "The show must go on..." Just positively wonderfully done.

Very descriptive - and a very different perspective to what we read about clowns. Nice take :)

.... and to think the poor clown was invented to make us laugh .... it has become quite versatile to describe so many situations & emotions!! thank you for your support :)

Once again i love your descriptive writing as you know. This poem by you really captures what some of those people behind the clowns mask may feel. Capivating once again.
