never date a poet

never date a poet

A Poem by Dana Alsamsam
"

i should take my own advice

"
in your poetry you wash beauty
over curvaceous female bodies,
and guild their public transport depression
with romantical addictions,
hot messy hair and over sized clothing.
you light their pain ridden eyes
with moonlight and trick their loneliness
into an impetuous love story.

yet here i am right next to you,
sitting beneath the weight of your arm around me:

you trace your nails across my back
and i feel it burn instead of caress
you kiss me and bite my lip
to draw blood instead of seduce
you hold me tightly around the ribs
to break instead of protect

you look at me with sad eyes
your poetic mind swirling and concaving
behind your teeth,
and i feel like the already dead and bloody
carcass of roadkill being further torn apart
and deformed by austere rubber tires against gravel.

i wish you loved me like the characters
that flow from the tip of your pen.

I wish that I could take your advice as well... It seems a beautiful thing, to be with someone who has such a creative and beautiful poetic mind, but sometimes we find that there are more demons than light, and that the "subjects" of his/her poetry are actually more important than we are. Again, i have written about this..."A Poet's Farewell" is one that I wrote recently about one of my poetic dating transgressions...lol Perhaps you would appreciate it.

I wish you loved me like the characters
that flow from the tip of your pen. -- Truly feel you here...completely and fully.

This is a fabulous write...I'm very impressed.

There are poets and poets, Eglantine....poets that write for the heart and those that write from the heart....as a sometime performance poet over the years, I`ve met a few of the latter sort ...they have all the words and none of the heart, though you`d never know! Some of them are brilliant, and will be remembered into posterity as soulful bards, but have the biggest egos and most disasterous relationships. P.

Yes, I have vowed to never date a poet myself. I feel like there'd be too much competition and bitterness.

Suggestion: "you trace your nails across my back / --it burns"

Thank you for sharing.

Very good, In the poem the character describes of is aware of the other person being a player and how besides being aware of I told you so, the character falls for the illusion the player has spelled on the character of the poem.

hey, thank you for writing well. i wouldn't read it if it weren't for you-
Wow this was just so incredible! The image of a poet creating and destroying everything in sight just to rebirth everything in a more romantically tragic illusion... You kiss me and bite my lip, to draw blood instead of seduce...The poet draws truths but the poet can also find a muse this way too... The irony of this poet... Love this!

thank you so much for stopping by and giving me a read! i really like your interpretation :)
Powerful juxtaposition in your imagery. Reality versus illusions. It was haunting, as if his capacity to create such lovely pictures of others should translate to this relationship. But how often we neglect those we should be the closest too. Dana excellent poem.

My two favorite sections:
yet here i am right next to you,
sitting beneath the weight of your arm around me:

i wish you loved me like the characters
that flow from the tip of your pen.

thank you so much for reading and your kind review!
we should all take our own advice but we rarely do. This write is 99% of the problem with the difference between reality and fiction, you have expressed it perfectly and with such finesse.
