never date a poet

never date a poet

A Poem by Dana Alsamsam
"

i should take my own advice

"
in your poetry you wash beauty
over curvaceous female bodies,
and guild their public transport depression
with romantical addictions,
hot messy hair and over sized clothing.
you light their pain ridden eyes
with moonlight and trick their loneliness
into an impetuous love story.

yet here i am right next to you,
sitting beneath the weight of your arm around me:

you trace your nails across my back
and i feel it burn instead of caress
you kiss me and bite my lip
to draw blood instead of seduce
you hold me tightly around the ribs
to break instead of protect

you look at me with sad eyes
your poetic mind swirling and concaving
behind your teeth,
and i feel like the already dead and bloody
carcass of roadkill being further torn apart
and deformed by austere rubber tires against gravel.

i wish you loved me like the characters
that flow from the tip of your pen.

I wish that I could take your advice as well... It seems a beautiful thing, to be with someone who has such a creative and beautiful poetic mind, but sometimes we find that there are more demons than light, and that the "subjects" of his/her poetry are actually more important than we are. Again, i have written about this..."A Poet's Farewell" is one that I wrote recently about one of my poetic dating transgressions...lol Perhaps you would appreciate it.

I wish you loved me like the characters
that flow from the tip of your pen. -- Truly feel you here...completely and fully.

This is a fabulous write...I'm very impressed.

Uh, I can't condone the message of this poems title as I am a poet, lol. The body of this piece, pun intended, is gorgeous in its description, the voice tender and seemingly insecure, but more rightly astute and possibly perceptive. What's roadkill to some is a fine meal to another, as twisted and deluded as that might sound. Be the beauty that inspires the poets mind and heart, not just physically but emotionally and artistically. Perhaps, it isn't you that isn't measuring up, but he/she who isn't a strong enough poet to capture you completely.

You are welcome, fellow poetess I wish you well.
My 'God' Dana this poem his so powerful and full of pathos. It has deep hurt and regret and yet such longing intertwined. My advice choose your poet carefully!

It is unsettling how much this poem puts me in mind of myself...even though I write a lot of personal stuff, there is no question that my poet's persona is light years away from my true self, and even though I can't say I've been in this predicament, the mere possibility of it scares me a bit...of course, these are all compliments in light of how much I was able to tap into this piece and hear it speak to me on a deep personal level...that's the essence of poetry, and the essence of poetry is on full display here :)

This is incredible, but kind of painful as I felt like I was viewing it from the other side. Your word choice is potent, thanks for the beautiful write.

thank you so much for stopping by and giving me a read!
for some reason it won't allow me to include the rest of my review...so i'll add onto it here:

Just one small suggestion that you can either take or omit on your own intuition. I don't think the last line, "you don't make me feel beautiful" is necessary. I feel like those feelings are already strongly implied that that particular line, doesn't add anything. However, the line before it.."I wish you loved me....tip of your pen" I think is a great place to conclude. I'm really enjoying your work Dana. Keep it up!!

You're welcome! :)
I really loved reading this. I felt the pain and loneliness she probably quietly suffered inside, holding out hope that maybe one day he would start to love her the way he did his work. For me, the last three stanzas really stood out in this piece. The imagery was outstanding..."I feel like the already dead and bloody carcass of roadkill being further torn apart and deformed by austere rubber tires against gravel." WOW!!

Looks like he loves his craft a little more than his significant other. That's a usual fork in the road for most people who are more passionate about their careers rather than their so-called intimate relationships. Great work here. I liked the overall message you've conveyed here. :)

Dana this is amazing...so different with the phrases you use...

i can't pick out favorite lines, they are all wonderful

and how sad...can a poet be that ruthless in real life and that tender and loving in their poetry?

ah yes,...take arthur Rimbau---nasty individual...beautiful poetry...

i love this poem...one of my favorites i have read here.
