Divorce

Divorce

A Poem by Deborah Leah Krempa

Stepped out of the mire

Right into the fire

The day I got my divorce

The frying pan was hot

Happy I was not

The day I got my divorce

I was beaten, battered and abused

Just plain tired of being used

The day I got my divorce

My son was molested

My husband should have been arrested

The day I got my divorce

I had a new boyfriend he waited outside

New bruises from him I could not hide

The day I got my divorce

Stepped out of the mire

Right into the fire

The day I got my divorce

The frying pan was hot

Happy I was not

The day I got my divorce

My children were crying

Inside I was dying

The day I got my divorce

Who would have thought that things could get worse

Unless of course I go home in a black hearse

Today I get my divorce

I know the feeling of being a child and parents getting a divorce along with bad fighting all the time. So I can share that side with your children. Kudos to you for being able to get out of that situation and for what I hope was a better situation.
As the ending says you could have gone home in a black hearse, but you didnt - which makes you a survivor. Thanks for sharing. Sorry it took so long for me to read it.

I know the pain that you are trying to express, but with regards to structure and general interest, this poem is very bland. It gets tedious with the constant 'The day I got my divorce' verse. If anything, it could be labelled a little childish. I think that for so much emotional struggle, you could do a much better job.

Oh how horrible-don't we have a cycle? We have a cycle that can't seem to be broken.I have married so many jerks-am I a jerk magnet? I feel so sorry for your situation. It's time to go through the process again-or buy a gun.

Kudos to you dear Deb, for your courage to pack and leave such an abusive situation as you
found yourself in. Sometimes it must feel like jumping out of the fat into the frying pan (something
like that! lol)

Anyway you are a survivor, so pat yourself on the back and walk into the future without looking back
my dear friend.

Your use of tercet verse gives it a cadence that fits the theme very well. I like how you attached the refrain to the couplets, that too adds to the point of the work and the subtle turn in the last tercet really drives things home.

One could not call it a happy poem, but it is a very good poem that addresses a moral issue the world faces today and that, after all, is the point of poetry.

Well done.

Divorce is so painful, especially for the kids. Your strength is evident in your writing. Your writing is a crown upon your head. Peace to you.
