A Tiny Sparrow Fell

A Tiny Sparrow Fell

A Poem by Deborah Leah Krempa

A tiny sparrow fell today

I felt such sorrow

As I walked along this path

And then it dawned on me

I, like the sparrow have fallen

So harshly to the ground

The spirit of this bird

Has called me to this place

Here in my mind

As I wonder how life can be

So damn unkind

My conscience telling me

To go back to where his lifeless body lay

Pick up his remains

Bury them in my own back yard

Leaving an offering

Of tobacco

As I burn cedar, sweet grass and sage

These were my thoughts today

Do I walk on passed him

Leave his body to decay

In this concrete jungle

Of which I must reside

Knowing in my heart I need to let go

Of my foolish pride

Go back and bring him home

Bury him and cover him with a medicine stone

Allow his spirit to soar with me

So I don't have to walk this earth alone

Sad, yet filled with compassion. This piece reminded me of a poem entitled Self-Pity
" I never saw a wild thing
sorry for itself.
A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough
without ever having felt sorry for itself" D. H. Lawrence

And so did you? So often when I see a bird (pheasant, hawk, sparrow) dead along the road, I think to stop
and take it home to bury it, but I keep driving, though I cry. Makes me feel bad.
I think I need to start taking more care of the dead. Bless You
