she can't disconnect

she can't disconnect

A Poem by E.A Cummins

It's a bit upsetting

That it's all too uncomfortable for everyone else

They want to avoid the situation

And avoid conversation about it

Especially in front of those involved

Let's just leave her in the dark

And make her feel all the more alone

In the muddy waters

That she can't see in either

She never had peace as an option

Chaos dropped at her feet

As an obstacle she couldn't walk around

Or away from

They tell her to move on

Not to think about it

Not to be mad

Not to let it get to her

And they leave it at that

Leave her alone with herself

She thinks they are all uncomfortable around her

They never offered help

Or prayers

They thought those battles didn't belong to her

Never realizing the war she was handed

She never wanted to fight

But now she sleeps with demons in her head

When they let her sleep

She seeks the peace for herself

But the chaos is hosting on her

Because the feelings are attached

and she can't disconnect

At first I thought the poem was describing someone who had experienced some kind of abuse. Then toward the end it seemed the problem was mental illness, though one of those misfortunes doesn't automatically exclude the other. Whatever, the wound left by the trauma is still festering, and the person apparently can't let go of it. I can only hope the help that is available will eventually be utilized.
