The Significance of 8

She asked "how much is your love?"
He says "Much more than the stars."
She asked, "How long would it last?"
He wrote on the box of cigars.

8. it says. 8. it read.
She was puzzled by such incoherency.
Was this some Aztec writing?
'Cause his answer can't be that bluntly!

What did it mean, 8 years, 8 days?
8 minutes? Oh, God, please, no.
Her smile was shaking, about to break.
Her reply was an awkward: "Oh."

Flowers wither, snows melt,
A day goes by, quite unfelt.
Yet one wonders, why so?
Why beauty and love have to go?

"You got that wrong, my love,"
He says with caring eyes.
He turned the paper clockwise,
"Infinity? Forever?" She sighs.
