![]() Someone's DaughterA Poem by EmeraldFacet
A treasure box constructed of solid gold
Built to shield a new young life. In your own image, you cast the mold A sincere attempt to guard her from strife. You built her a golden cage with care, Bars forged from fear and lined with prayer. To shield her from the beast outside Its teeth, its claws, the world’s cruel tide. But cages, no matter how softly sealed, Shrink for the soul that longs to feel. While you fought to keep her safe, You lost yourselves in life’s embrace. Have you forgotten your own reflection, Now that you don a permanent disguise? Does the memory of your face scorch your heart Is that why you won’t look into her eyes? She's bold like her father, brave like her mother, Her fire and fight, like yours and no other. The beast’s relentless bites turned your loving hearts to stone, With great tragedy, now her strength feels not like your own. Have you forgotten it was your beauty that shaped her face, The reverberating echo of yourselves time will never erase. In her lives what you can no longer see Your courage, your spark, your legacy. I searched for your gaze to feel like I belonged, To be seen, to be held, to know that I was strong. But when your eyes turned away from me I learned to become the one I needed to be She’s certainly someone’s daughter And now that someone is me. I cradle the girl I once was, And guard her so tenderly. © 2025 EmeraldFacetReviews
