speed trap

speed trap

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

speed trap

wrinkled blouse

calloused hands roughhousing skin

a few buttons undone

morality takes a back seat

the upholstery says an act of contrition

our bodies accelerate into new dimensions

formidable constellations shoot across

the sky like unwed prayers

the stick shift midnight

moves into fifth gear

and our breath takes dangerous curves

too fast for the penance

that will never catch up

our conscience will never stay on the road

but guardrails of fear

hold us back

we slow down,

confession will last a few less minutes

and the rosary hellos

tomorrow will be said

with just a bit less blush.

Sometimes getting lost in the heat of passion is needed to help us live with no regrets.

that is true...thank you, Dale.

You have transported me to the backseat of an orange dodge challenger driven by a smooth operator named Raul who turned me on to ZZTop, a love that lasted, but the relationship did not. We never got beyond the backseat, unfortunately! *smile* I love all your playful metaphors, especially the upholstery comment, as we all remember the contortions & sticky skin against plastic. Gotta love these memories! Good job dredging up some long-forgotten ones! (((HUGS)))

so very relatable ..your poem makes me a teen once again ...thank goodness for catching the brain that says "slow down" ... i was raised Catholic and schooled by nuns, priests and the good Brothers ..chuckled and smiled thru the litany of fumbling and adventure of driving too fast ... wonderful fun poem for me ..the conscientiousness of guilt an automatic with Hail Marys and Our Fathers ... but that damnable stick shift says fourth gear baby! another set of fine metaphors and humanity .. enjoyed very much!

Roughhousing skin, never heard it put that way. The upholstery says an act of contrition, great line.

This whole piece is filled with great lines. Nice work Jacob!

Al
