A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

favorite songs and other knick-knacks

you left grief stains on my heart

a graffiti of emotions,

artwork with delusional surrealism

i wanted you in the painting as you were

very real, so that my tactile fingers could touch you again

could sing along with your guitar smile

i wanted our song to continue forever

not have you go to heaven at twenty-seven

had to be that one last cigarette

then you and the rest of the pack

dissolved into ashes

and my heart buried into them

like a phoenix with no chance to rise

i still remember your eyes,

the ones they said were gone

even before your last goodbye

you were almost like a blink in my left

eye shadow melting before it set

breaking my heart with your exit.

and that rose on your grave

it's the one with the designs

that look like strings

and in the sad breeze

plays easy

melodies that match the graffiti

of a lost backup singer---

staring at an empty mic.

and a feather on the floor of the stage.

Sometimes all we have left are painful memories of lost friendship. Was reminded of Browning's Duchess
for some reason. Good write, j.

thank you, Ted...appreciate your words.

I think it's the legacy these artists leave us. From Hendrix, to Joplin. Amy Winehouse. They all have that self destruct button, which comes out in their music. But as long as their music is still relevant.
They will always be with us.

This is one of the best ones of yours that I've read so far. I love the way it goes further in depth than many of your poems do, showing us a longer glimpse of the journey & with so many observations well described, so relatable. There's a inherent sadness, of course, becuz of losing a person too young. But the overall effect of your poem is a celebration of this life. I almost felt like I was there, too, you shared it so vividly.

thank you for your kindness of words, barleygirl

The mic on stage - the feather - such a poignant scene.
27 is no age - there was so little time.
Well penned Jacob.

Drawn to this by the title. Haven't the foggiest to be fair as to the identity of the subject in this poem, famous or known to you ( perhaps both) that didn't detract from me enjoying this greatly. You're up at the top of the tree Jacob, a bit like the angel at xmas and we are your baubles....sometimes I'm the foil wrapped bucket. Cheers

oh yes...was a tragic loss for all who knew her...

thank you,
j.
Sadly left her imprints on your life and mind. It all happened in the wee hours of her life and before the exit.
A heart-breaking poem...:)..............

Heartbreaking....and yet so full of admiration and romance. Smoking is a hard habit to break...I know. Cancer takes too many too young. Lydi**
