Zip Codes for the Inner Circle

Zip Codes for the Inner Circle

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Zip Codes for the Inner Circle

golden waters

tight lipped statues

clench fists when names are drawn

color finds its way into the parchment

envelopes sealed,

let us rejoice the stamps

but not the perpetrators

the final mailbox

might be on the wrong side of town

but opens the same as others

and the flag can be raised

or lowered to half-staff

if the voices lick the glue of faith

in humanity,

there are no losers

we are all nominated for best actor

gender is only an address god gave us

to find our way home to self-awareness

and we find self equally

even when the waters

aren't golden.

this is a poem full of different interpretations, i just wonder what if we are recognized not by our names but by zip codes? how can we maintain that uniqueness as an individual?
