spill

spill

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

spill

drop me a line

into the soup

contract, murky manifestations of love

i am Campbell's confused child

you are my teacher,

but affections float like stale crackers

in my bowl of you

am i just an ephemeral lunch

a noon take-out,

or might i be an elegant entree

later when the magic wears off

the napkin is smeared with yesterday's old melodies

the paper smudged with doubt

i might wait patiently in the cupboard

or just reach my expiration date

prematurely...

like a song that spent only one week on the charts

then disappeared silently

into nothing.

The speaker here is so beautifully and honestly confused—unsure weather they’re a casual lunch or... more—completely unsure of how they will react over time. A perfectly relatable, simple/complex poem.

Leftovers from a forgotten meal, morphing into an unrecognizable memory that stinks up the entire fridge.

How stupid I am. I read 'old memories'.
I have this image of a can of Campbell's condensed chicken soup sat on an otherwise empty shelf in the cupboard. It is such a strong image that I can't erase it. Some people really like soup for lunch, as a starter for an evening meal and I've even known a few who have it for breakfast. This poem creates a feeling of rejection and loneliness. Your poetry is so multi layered Jacob, I think I am becoming an onion peeler.

No eye sting from your layers Jacob.
i like the cream of mushroom with croutons that is already a heavenly lunch for me but seriously the words here are magnificently written the flow of words is smooth there is clarity in both words and thoughts
