A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

in the box

interrogate me tonight

i might be in the mood

to poem you some answers

yet shallow as they may be

i will never let you look inside me

i will rot in the cell

before you are privy to my themes

my replies will border on obscurity

but in the abstract hours

there may be some clues

may be some accessibility

some vulnerability

a chance for you

to break my heart's case

or maybe,

you will just thank me for my time

the few syllables

the rhyme

give me leave

to confess to my keyboard

and grant my own reprieve.

A great subject for a poem. Just how much of ourselves do we put in our poetry and just how much do we want to reveal to the audience. Clues may be left, but they may not be understood. Readers generally want to find meaning in the words, not just picking up on imagery. When I read a poem, I want to leave it thinking I have understood what the poet was trying to convey. If I can't do that, I either think it wasn't a good poem, or I was too thick to interpret it. But then again poetry is subjective, what I have understood may not be what the poet intended. I ask myself does it matter?
