Brittle Epistolary

Brittle Epistolary

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Brittle Epistolary

crisp letters,

never sent.

yellow paper crackling

in my heart

my hands batter the keys

holding you

with apathetic longing

you were my intensity

and then silence drew your pen

away from me

leaving me writing ineffective love poems

with not an iota of feeling

read with no reaction

just a sternly critical gasp

exploding from a trenchant eye.

Sometimes we turn to apathy as a defense mechanism to protect our hearts. Then all that is left is trying to write something creative, academic, and well-received, to compensate for the lack of passion we feel towards the subject matter. I feel like I am definitely guilty of being too calculated in the way I craft my poems.

I was left thinking about those letters never sent, which in turn left me thinking about my younger years and words I wished I had said. Communication is essential for romance to flourish. Yes there may have been rejections, but then there may also have been pleasant surprises which have since passed by.

Love letters never sent? Hmmm....they not only get yellow with age, but they become more meaningful. We write then....sometimes in the form of poetry....hoping that special someone will see them and return the feeling. Unfortunately that does not always happen. Love the words trenchant and epistolary! Lydi**

I was reading this poem and wondering much about how love or the demise of it influences our poetry, how our state of mind affects what we write....
