THE WRATH OF MOTHER EARTH

THE WRATH OF MOTHER EARTH

A Poem by Eve
"

A poem to commemorate Global Earth Day, April 22...

"

It happened not so long ago,

Enraged Nature inflicting woe.

Mother Earth had roared again,

Shouting and smashing,

Fury bent

Upon humanity,

Did violence vent.

Her child shrieked

In its pain

From damage and ruin,

Advancement named.

Heeding its mighty mother’s call,

It dutifully erupted, shattering all,

And, within its wake

Destruction unleashed,

Without abate.

Marie wakened and claimed the sea

Bellowing in delayed harmony.

No respite granted the souls of men

As Napa lingered

Yet again.

 With breaths stilled

In measurable pain,

Marie rose higher

That tumultuous year,

Turbulent flooding,

Swells viewed in fear.

Mother Earth thundered,

Exploding once more,

Spewing and shuddering

From ground to core,

Hurled a last angry blow.

We cried to the heavens in abject defeat.

Injured and supplicant, cowering low.

We wept and cursed

Mid mankind’s plight,

While Mother Earth crashed,

Amassing her might.

Wrecking havoc

For her wounded own,

Her savage thrashing

For man alone.

A warning of disaster loomed ahead,

Should her wrath be ignored

And wantonly shed.

Dismissed as before,

For material gain,

While her progeny suffered

More injury and dread.

Mother Earth promised

Reprisal again.

Listen and hear her,

           All nations of men…

                           finis

The rhyme and sometimes uncommon language seems to emulate the classics (personally it brings to mind images of JMW Turner's stormier paintings). It's very effective, lends the poem a certain power/authority on an almost biblical level. I like it, keep it up!
