Poetic Retraction

Poetic Retraction

A Poem by Frieda P

Shall I take back all my poetic injustice
does it not fit in your realm of meter and tack
my rhythm seeks that of a different drummer
another lover of a different color perhaps
is it not presumptuous to say it has not merit
my madness grants me permission to steer
words convoluted and distortion, beware
when all is said and done, no one has won
words are words that affect one another
be they warm, or square, they sit and despair
what will people think of me, naked and abject
stir them in a pot of reality with wretched added
or add sweet kisses and adulation for all to see
cheap, vulgar, saccharin, or beguiling illusions
they're all the delusions of the poets alchemy

poetry means many different things to everyone. I have found for myself, that the only way to write is to write to express myself, and to hell with what anyone else thinks of it. There are enough restrictions, rules and constraints in real life...this is my imaginary world, and the only rules are of my own choosing, and the only one who needs pleasing is me. Poetry??? Make of it what you need and want it to be.

It's all poetry. Don't sweat the meter...
I know a few (and yes, only a few) that write in meter and rhyme and they're talented enough to keep my attention, over and over, because they've actually woven a fabulous message within all that hard work. It has a place for me in poetry, but I write in free verse more often than not - and I prefer to READ free verse more than meter and rhyme. Poetry to me, is about the message the pauses, inflections, pulse points, nuances in tense and verse, etc., from reading it myself or hearing it from a writer's own spoken word reading. Each of us has our own style!

I think we all want our poetry to connect to others, that way we know we are not alone in our feelings... yes a great connection needs chemistry. I love your thought process here.

Never believe a word I say if my lips are moving hon ;-P
Wow this really reminded me of myself and my obsession with rhythm and meter...even though I write mostly free verse, they ALL have a discernible rhythm...I absolutely love the sixth line, and the multitude of connotations that go with it...get in, sit down, shut up, and hold on ;D

Did the poetry police pay you a visit? I hate when they do that. They have so many rules and regulations. I prefer to follow my own beat too.

Are we all delusional? Yes. Word scientists are all a little nuts. You have to be to continue to try making gold from ordinary crap. We are all our own magnum opus.

Poetry is a voice given to a feeling. That is my definition. Everyone has their own. I don't think there is a right or wrong way to be a poet. People need to worry about their own writing instead of policing others. No retracting necessary.

Love it, Frieda :)

We shall go mad together then in this arena Pax...thanks! ;-)
Below is a definition of Poetry.
I found it interesting the first part of defining it referred to metrical writing. Thank goodness they didn't end there. (I would have to find something different to write.)
For some, that is all well and good. For others, meter, form, even rhyme is "not" a concern or a requirement. Either way, it's still poetry. It asks the reader for a moment or two "for a consideration of a thought."
It could be as simple as

"Hug me... love me."

Or it could be as strict and masterful writings of Shakespeare, or T.S. Eliot, even with a freedom of Mr. McKuen.

Either way, the above writer has nothing to apologize or retract.

Definition of POETRY
1
a : metrical writing : verse
b : the productions of a poet : poems
2
: writing that formulates a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience in language chosen and arranged to create a specific emotional response through meaning, sound, and rhythm
3
a : something likened to poetry especially in beauty of expression
b : poetic quality or aspect
