My Map

I once said that I studied you, I knew you completely,

Yes, that is true, even now when I close my eyes I still see you,

With you as my atlas and your body as my map, I could always find my way home,

Exploring with my devoted hands I got to know every curve, every peak, and every valley,

And I never needed a compass to guide me - when I knew how far it was to Heaven.

I never needed to travel the world when I could discover it with my fingertips,

With you as my adventure, traveling your landscape was easy and I never got lost,

It doesn't take a blind man to know what's written upon your skin was the four points of my world,

And it was easy for me to translate your flaws into the familiar places of your perfection.

Your visual appeal lies within your borders and it bridges the span from fantasy to reality,

For me to love you - I journeyed all your mountains, your deserts, your jungles,

I survived your sea of tears and the molten lava that flows beneath your equator,

And to get to the destination of your heart all I had to do was follow the constellation of stars....

I think it's very romantic to make this kind of metaphor. Modern society projects the body as a sexual toy, but that's a one-dimensional, empty delusion. There's a beautiful depth to the intimacy that considers a body to be a map of the world, the ups and downs, the beauty and flaws, the light and dark, the highs and lows that come with the true affection between two people.

This is truly awesome! By far the best poem of yours I've read so far. The concept is brilliant & the execution is mind-blowing. I love the way you take your time & spell it all out in tons of details. Many poets seem to be too hesitant to really dig in deep as you've done here. There's much visual & sensory attention to detail here, which to me, is the crux of writing poetry. Your straightforward storytelling is somewhat like prose, but your writing is very lyrical & poetic, so it's definitely a poem! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
