In my defense

In my defense

A Poem by Joseph LaBarge

In my defense,

no one ever said it could be this way.

"Choose" a side,

black or white,

wrong or right,

just make a decision.

and stick with it.

was all they'd say.

and never could it be

down the middle

split

like a mood

always thick and predetermined

by fate or fatal

never was it explained

that there was a choice for the negative

raw and un blemishing

never did they say i would have to shave

two shades grayer

boy/girl

or both

this is the only exception

except by way of deception or force

intrepid by voice and color

pretty and bold

how they hold the keys to enept conception

so what are the parts

apart from the parts

that make the decision

is it real or invisioned

cant it be

simply felt

or in my defense

must it be a choice?

not as long as i am,

and can

choose only to define

myself.

as this

human
