White on Black

White on Black

A Chapter by GZ

You can only go so far as you believe.

Even with the right tools, an amateur can only do so much.

Even with the right mind, a child can only learn so much.

I have learned from this trip that life is full of messages and mysteries.

Both waiting to be uncovered, if one dares to do so.

My path parallels such.

I won't say it is a contingency or coincidence.

My own path is my own choice.

I force my eyes open. But everything is covered in a thick sheet of black.

Where… am I?

Last I remember, I was at home, comfily asleep in my bed.

I miss the warmth of my blanket already.

The concrete floor is cold under my feet. I’m not wearing any shoes.

Blinded by the darkness, my hands circle around my waist, feeling for anything nearby.

They find a desk, or a table or something.

I turn my body in that direction and spread the upper half of my body on it.

Something jabs into my chest.

I immediately regret that decision. How stupid of me.

Yanking myself back up, I search for what I layed upon.

Once again, my hands find the object and I bring it to my face.

I can’t see much, but it resembles a flashlight.

That’ll be helpful.

Finding the switch, I flick it on, but the dim light falters not even four feet in front of me.

And it didn’t even illuminate anything.

I point it at the ground, at least the concrete will be somewhat reflectant.
The circle of light stretches out a bit.

The room is bigger than I thought.

I walk a few steps forward, trying to map it in my head.

But I’m terrible with estimations.

I stop at what seems to be an archway.

The walls narrow and create what seems to be an endless hallway.

But those don’t exist. Nothing is infinite.

Except numbers.

And theoretical space.

And probably time.

Rephrasing.

Nothing of material is infinite.

Dare I enter?

Yes.

Usually when lost, one is told to stay put and wait for someone to find you.

But in this scenario, no one could quickly find me in this dark labyrinth.

That’s just assuming.

The best act would be to find an exit as soon as possible.

I long to see sunlight.

A distance away, I hear the soft tinkling of a metallic object hitting the surface of the cement.

What is the cause of it?

Sadly, I can’t point the exact direction of the sound.

Why is it upsetting?

If I knew which direction it came from, I can:

find the source of said noise

flee from the source of said noise.

But as I said, I can’t.

I’ve been walking for a while. Only one thing caught my attention in that span.

I was in a daze for walking so long, when something scurried past me.

I pulled back into the real world and turn around to find out what it was.

I saw nothing.

Since then, nothing extraordinary happened.

Not until I come across dots of blood on the ground.

How… uch, riveting.

These are… definitely fresh…

Not stained.

I… I feel like I might… vomit.

I must mention I’m hemophobic. Just a little.

I don’t faint or anything. I just get “sick in the stomach”.

And maybe a little light-headed.

Well, before I know it, I pass out onto the floor.

I regain consciousness sometime later.

Hm, that's strange.

My flashlight has been turned off.

There's no way that I could've done it amidst my... fainting.

I don't usually believe in paranormal activity, but...

No, there must be an explanation for this.

I can't just believe something due to a single anomaly.

There are two openings now.

Simple decision, left or right?

I must've come from one of them.

I don't remember.

I take the left path.

Might as well go somewhere.

I don't get far when I hear thud, followed by an obnoxious crashing sound.

It's down the path I am traveling.

It's not too late to turn back, I tell myself.

But as the story goes, curiosity killed the cat.

I keep on my path.

My flashlight lands on something partly in the exit of this hall.

I hear the same scurrying as before.

I manage to muster out a soft "Hello?".

There is no recall.

Upon further inspection, I realize that the half-blockade is what I presume to be my table from when I first found myself here.

I have traversed a full circle, to come back to whence I began.

I bring my flashlight back up.

Oh.

Across the room, there lies a corpse, massacred and bloodied.

I... I might faint again.

I feel my body swaying backwards, but something catches me.

It's sharp.

The last thing I hear is my flashlight hitting the concrete floor.
