Do you know Auden’s Musee des Beaux Arts? I’ll put it on my page, if you haven’t read it, it’ll be there. It’s a great poem about a painting about Icarus. But it’s much more than that (of course).

I like this one a lot. I’m fascinated by the Icarus idea. The old myths have such power to reach into the future and allow us to see ourselves where we are in a kind of early morning low light that exposes everything. At least that’s how I see them sometimes.

Icarus being youth and drive and impulse, but there’s more. The desire to be — something else or somewhere else. I like the simplicity of this because like the myths and biblical stories there is a lot left to the imagination so we are able to fill in the gaps with our own experiences or understandings.

The orange glow of sun through windows is something I’ve been trying to describe properly for years. Haven’t found the right words yet. Vitamin C is excellent.

And then. It’s a grounded Icarus. I liked the way that ending played on my expectations. Sometimes the crash isn’t visible. Or sometimes we choose not to actually pursue it. Or. There are multiple possibilities which is what I like so much about it. I’ll keep thinking about it.

Wish I had written this poem.

That lovely Christmas card with the snow all around just depressing the sun out of you.
I need the sun the whole year-round. Think I was stolen from the Caribbean when I was baby, though the parents vehemently deny this.
