What Do You Do

What Do You Do

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

As you’re walking down the hall

You see a girl standing there

Her back’s against the wall

She’s cornered and helpless

As you’re heading to class

You hear a chorus of laughs

A girl is surrounded

You can see she’s crying

What do you do?

Should you stand up for her?

Or walk by and ignore her?

Her eyes are pleading for you to rescue her

You pretend you don’t see

Or you join in on the fun

You become one of the ones

Who call her names she hasn’t forgotten

It’s better to be the one taunting

Than to be the brunt of the joke

That was always your mentality

But it makes you what you claim her to be

Who’s the monster now?

Tell me who’s the b***h?

She just wanted to fit in

Now she’s afraid to go to school

You could have defended her

You could have been brave

You could have been her hero

But instead you turned away

You could have saved a life

You could have made it right

Instead you made it worse

You only ever cared about yourself
