Along the Way

Along the Way

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

We swore we'd be friends forever

If only we'd known how long that was

Because forever almost always ends

In “I don't want to see your face ever again”

We thought we had it all figured out

We thought we knew what relationships were all about

We learned the hard way we were wrong

And lost ourselves somewhere along the way

I stored you away in a compartment

I locked you away in the back of my brain

To a place I rarely revisit

But every now and then you resurface

When we're children we're more trusting

When we're young we still believe

We somehow think we'll be friends forever

But as we grow older we grow apart

On rainy days and troubled nights

I think back to the afternoons spent at your house

And back to the sleepovers at mine

But all they do is make me miss you that much more

Every cell in my body aches

And every centimeter of my heart breaks

I really believed we'd be friends forever

But I lost myself somewhere along the way
