Forgiveness

Forgiveness

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

I thought I needed your forgiveness

Like I needed air to breathe

It used to kill me to know how you think of me

You see a monster where I saw a broken heart

I’ve said some things that I regret

I’ve said some words I can’t take back

You didn’t deserve what I did to you

But I never deserved what you did to me either

There came a day when I realized

That your forgiveness is something I’ll never have

And there came a day when I realized

That maybe I don’t need it anyway

I thought I needed your forgiveness

In order to forgive myself

But though I still need the air to breathe

I don’t need your forgiveness after all
