Back Before

Back Before

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

To tell it true sometimes I miss

All of that sweet innocence

Back before I ever fell in love

Back before that word was dead to me

Back when I lived a fairytale

Back when I had a prince

Back before I learned to my despair

That not all love is unconditional

To tell it true sometimes I wish

I had never tasted the forbidden fruit

I wish I’d never met that snake

Or given into temptation

Back when I believed in soul mates

Back when I thought you were mine

Back before I knew life could be cruel

Back before I knew people could be so cold

To tell it true I’m better now

I’m alone but for once I’m whole

I’ve had my taste of the forbidden fruit

And it left me with a bitter trace

Because I no longer believe in fairytales

And I no longer have my prince

But I’m happier without your costly, trivial love

And His is the only one I need

Beautiful, bitterly honest and relateable. Loved it.

Very true. Most people crave the days when all was well and innocent. But as you get older, you realize that you're better off because you have experienced so much and learned your lessons. Love this poem.
