Understand

Understand

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

Do you understand why

I’m having difficulty?

Letting you back into my life

Is anything but easy

I want nothing more

Than to have the old you

To return to what we shared

If only it could be so simple

You keep promising me

That this time will be different

I’ve heard that before

Then you walked out the door

Don’t tell me you love me

If you’re going to leave

Don’t tell me I’m still your kid

If you don’t mean it deep down

Don’t feed me lies

I don’t want you to apologize

I just want you to change

And love me enough to try

Do you understand why

I’m having hesitations?

You come and go over and over

You can’t make up your mind

Don’t make me promises

That you can’t keep

You can either stay or leave

It shouldn’t be this difficult

If you walk out that door

Know there are no more chances

I will change the locks on my heart

And throw the keys into the ocean

Do you understand?

This is killing me on the inside

You think it’s easy for me

To watch you turn your back

I need you to understand

Nothing has ever been this difficult

Nothing has ever hurt me as much

As turning you away

I want to welcome you back

Make my arms your home once more

They used to be where you belong

But they aren’t anymore

I need you to understand

That deep down I still love you

But I’m not your kid anymore

Not since you turned me away

Its really touché. Kid that endearment is close to my heart. I could relate to it. Its better to be strong than being weak and walked all over. Its truly written from an inner gusto that is whu it flows so naturally. No need to make up fake metaphors to make this good. :) Its so beautiful already. Keep writing

Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it!
Very good poem. I really loved it because I can relate to it due to past experiences, especially to the verse:

"Don’t tell me you love me
If you’re going to leave
Don’t tell me I’m still your kid
If you don’t mean it deep down"

I really dont see any faults with the poem, it seems good to me... Maybe I personally would change:
"I need you to understand" into "I wish you could understand" in the third last verse, but only because I could relate to it more.

Good Job! :D

Thank you! That's my favorite part of the poem too! That's actually the first part I wrote!
