Our Forever

Our Forever

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

It was seven long years ago

That’s crazy to think about

It’s sad to think our time apart

Has exceed the time we had together

Five years was all we got

It constituted our forever

In some ways it felt like a lifetime

In others like a blip on the screen

Our rebellion was using dirty words

We thought we were so cool

But not too cool for summer school

It’s strange how now I long for those days

The days when the mulch was hot lava

When our world was the park behind my house

The slippery slide was a metaphor

And you rode the seesaw like a surfboard

Even back then when we were young

Our lives were far from carefree

Our relationship became toxic

The burdens weighed heavy on us

It seems like a lifetime ago

I was a different girl then

Forever had a different meaning then

In the time before the end

I guess we weren’t strong enough

To handle time and change

Our bond broke like a twig

When you took their side, not mine

Our forever wasn’t perfect

It was as fragile as a soap bubble

But it’s worth my time to say

Our forever was beautiful
