Friend

Friend

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

You don’t choose who you love

Family isn’t made of blood

You don’t wake up one morning

To find the feelings have vanished

Your words broke me down

Took me so low I wouldn’t recover

These are the scars you left

The ties you severed with your theft

But if you ever need a hand

And if you ever want a friend

I haven’t changed my number

I still live at the same address

If you ever feel broken down

Come here to me and I’ll sweep you up

I’ll help you dust yourself off

I’ll help you pick up all the pieces

Your betrayal made me weak

But I can make you strong again

Don’t let what occurred in our past

Lead you to believe I’d shut you out

Our worlds are so different now

They warned us this would happen

We’ve lost what we shared in common

But I haven’t lost my love for you

So if you ever need a hand

And if you ever miss a friend

Don’t hesitate to give me a call

Because I’ll make us whole again
