The Door

The Door

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

You keep walking out the door

Only to come back the next day

I keep opening it up to you

I should just change the locks

I wish I could tell you to leave

Instead I beg you to stay

In my mind I scream “I hate you!”

Out my mouth comes “I love you”

It’s a lot to give up

After all the work we’ve done

Is this really what you want?

I don’t know what I want

I’m exhausted from fighting

Why can’t we just have a conversation

Look outside, it’s raining

Like God is crying alongside me

We’re both terrified

So we both run and hide

We press our ears against the door

To listen to each other breathe

My hand’s on the knob

You raise yours to knock

My fingers start to tremble

Will I let you back in again?

You keep walking out the door

I should just change the locks

Yet I continue to pray

That you’ll come back another day
