Sympathy River

Sympathy River

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

I've tried to fix you

But I'm not a mechanic

No, I'm not a doctor

I'm not a therapist

And even they would be lost with you

Glue can't hold you together

Pills won't keep you sane

Music can't drown out your sorrow

Sleeping won't make the pain go away

You can only escape it for a brief while

My sympathy flowed like a river

But I'm in the midst of a drought

It hasn't rained here in four years

I can't fill it with my tears

When you keep sucking them up

I'm done trying to fix you

because I'm not a doctor

And I can't glue you back together

I'm exhausted and weary

And my sympathy river has run dry

LOVE this! Haven't we all been there? I know I have! Trying so hard to help someone, making sure to be there with a helping hand and open ears and nothing you say or do will help because they just won't listen to you like you listened to them. You exhaust all your options before you simply get fed up. I like how you explained your sympathy as a river. Showing that you were there with all of your heart ready to help. The ending is sad but you know, some people just can not be helped. Whether this piece is based on someone you tried to help or it was just a writing that popped up in your head, it is very easy to relate to. Love this piece! :)
