Dark Skinned African

Dark Skinned African

A Poem by M'Fun Keap
"

Proud Heritage

"

Come and sit, listen to the words of your Father

Take pride in who you are and do NOT wish for no other

Listen carefully and always remember.

One day, you will write history!

You are a dark skinned African.

Molded from the mud of your dark skinned motherland

They look at you and call you different?

Because you wear a dark tan you think yourself inferior?

Don’t be ridiculous!!

You began as a child running butt naked in the rain

Grew up in the slums. If you were lucky, eating once a day.

History wrote you off, each day re-echoing that you'll never make it

"In the slums you were born. In it...you die!"

But with your bare hands, work the ground.

From your slums grow a garden. In it, find utopia.

Scream in the ears of history "I will not go down!"

Wrestle the voices in your head. "I must survive!"

You come from Little Africa but that don’t mean your Africa is little!

Your identity is your pride. Do NOT hide it in the sand.

Though a pair of shoes is all you own, You stand equal with any man.

Same status, Same rights on Madiba’s land

Never had a car so in Kenya you learned to walk.

And from walking, to get to that destination, RUN!

The streets? your treadmill so its fine that you arrived a little late son

who knew that one day you would win the Olympic marathon

They said you would never make it but here you stand!

A dark skinned President, fear no man!

The slums you were raised in, stands in Africa.

A monument of the name you made, from the sweat of your own brow!

So call it what you may but NEVER think it a disadvantage. History starts now!

Indian ocean or Atlantic? It makes no difference where you started from

Once your feet felt the mud of this African soil

You be rest assured…By God! You ARE a dark skinned African!
