The Mimic Octopus and the Porcupine

The Mimic Octopus and the Porcupine

A Poem by H.L. Cerveise

The Mimic Octopus and the Porcupine

Imagine if you are in a different reality.
One in which a mimic octopus and a porcupine meet,
Now you say that's impossible.
Ah, but as I said this is a different reality.

The octopus falls in love with the porcupine.
However, though this is an alternate universe.
It is not perfect and never could be.
The porcupine goes about its day doing porcupine things.
Of course, the octopus darts around doing octopus things.

Now the porcupine bristles and tells of its day.
The octopus listens intently and waves its tentacles in understanding.
The octopus tries to reach out and express itself.
Sharp barbed spines of the porcupine prick and stick.

Years pass and now the octopus has hundreds of quills protruding from it.
It dips those quills stuck deep in its flesh in the ink it makes.
The words tumble on the pages as it uses its many appendages to write.
It shows some of the pages to the porcupine.
Now it thinks to itself the porcupine will understand it better.

In doing so the octopus drops its camouflage.
It reaches out again thinking maybe this time.
Nevertheless, it fails to realize; porcupines have bad eyesight.
The porcupine does not see clearly the lines across the pages.

The octopus tries to embrace the porcupine once again.
Even so, the very nature of the porcupine does it's unthinking damage.
New quills stick in still tender flesh as it floats in the gray murk.
The octopus sinks to the deep dark ocean bottom and thinks.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Funny how the world has expectations
that each animal must have certain things that define them
i see the mess that results from two very different species coming together to mate

but maybe thats all textbook restrains
whoever said animals dont evolve and change

so not insanity
not if you are a true scientist and have strong belief in life

I am your fan now lol
poetry stalking i guess

joking lol

True love exists without reaching or having an expectation to be reached., More so since they are an octopus and porcupine. I sense your pain in this story.

A lovely story that seems to be a parable to life. Even when we get hurt we just keep trying to reach the ones we love. There is a lot of symbolism in the poem that gives it more depth and meaning. I am going to gladly read and reread this poem many times. =)

As sad as it is, if the octopus truly loves the porcupine, odds are, it will continue trying to embrace it. I guess I identify with the octopus all too well and I don't blame it for trying to embrace the porcupine... Great read though, it brought a lot of emotion for me
