mustard bath

mustard bath

A Poem by Christine

her mother told her

she wanted to kill her

in the bathtub

her mother

almost took

a mustard bath

she took

amphetamines

vacuumed

mustard yellow

carpets

at odd hours

mustard yellow armpits

from unwashed clothes

mustard yellow walls

from smoking cigarettes

inside

dirty children

eating ketchup

butter sandwiches

raw hot dogs

uncooked spaghetti

poor women

used mustard baths

to get rid

of babies

they didn’t want

mustard is chemical warfare;

her children

didn’t know

they needed

gas masks

to breathe;

she’s still

choking

on the fumes
