Not close enough

Not close enough

A Poem by Jack...
"

Missed it by this much

"

Not close enough

I drink of the waters of sinner’s delight

Smooth to the taste I believe

Washed up ashore on a moonless lit night

Much more than one can conceive

Poured in a goblet of yellow and blue

Butterfly patterns a’ shine

Wings in the vestibule, blinding the view

There only destined of time

Here at the stairway that leads to your heart

Spiraling up to the sky

Winding in tapestries, threadbare to start

Whimsical fabrics now sigh

Taking each step as I breathe in the change

Shadows about do compare

Absolute beauty of love rearranged

Finding the most in each stair

Hallways extend each direction a’ flow

Candlelit beacons provide

A knock on your door in the midst of their glow

Whispers now call me inside

Therefore my eyes as a silhouette fine

Loveliness clings to a smile

Chantilly lace in the garments a’ shine

Filling my eyes all the while

Heavenly scent of magnolia bloom

Fresh as this hot summer’s fire

White opalescence in shades of the moon

Painting my soul with desire

Touches of satin, so smooth comes your skin

Breathless endeavors soon pour

Hoping on hope of the welcoming in

Of what this night has in store

Lips of chiffon in a raspberry grin

Porcelain shimmering thighs

Desperate these thoughts now awash in a sin

Breath comes a sonnet of sighs

Reaching I stumble, my balance unsure

Shivers, my toes to my spine

Stuttering nervous of this I adore

Formed of the sweetest design

Then with a wisp as the draperies wave

Flames flicker quick of the flow

Smoke from the wicks meets the ceiling once more

As I cry, where did you go

Standing here holding of one dozen roses

Cellophane wrapped round the stems

Seeing the window so quickly it closes

I was but this close again

In my mind, I see a beautifully appointed hall, with floor to ceiling windows covered in velvet curtains there are gas lamps flickering along the walls, and candles on a long table with a white tablecloth trimmed lace...there is the scent of magnolias and roses in the air...the whiff of a warm breeze blows through an open door...
And there you are, waltzing me down the page yet again.
You are a man of many talents...and you never cease to amaze me.
This is a lovely piece, reminiscent of days gone by...a bittersweet write that brings a sigh from my heart.
Elegantly done, my Sweet Talk...

A whirlwind of verse. I became swept up in this tale of almost love. (sixth stanza first word "Therefore")

Thank you so much sir. I will correct that directly.
Oh Jack! This piece had me feeling the ache in the last stanzas. He is just crushed. I can see those roses wilting along with him. The rhyme was perfectly done and this was a very well thought out poem. Really good! Angi~

My pleasure.
Awesome write Jack, I love it the whole way through, the rhyming is tight and the desire is palpable, like running a finger across some Chantilly lace. Soft, but underneath rages the fire. Great stuff sir!

Heavy sigh.....brings to mind the scene from "The Graduate" when Dustin Hoffman is banging on the church window! Classic poetry, Jack. The imagery is so vivid. The smells, sights, and sounds are richly described making the poem dance through each line. A poignant beauty of a poem. Lydi**

I wanted to find a perfect line, a perfect stanza to highlight but all are worthy.
I love the ending "I was but this close again" I have had those dreams also and wake up wishing to sleep once more but alas the dream never seems to pick up where it left off.. At least not for me.. The ease with which you weave words with such proficiency amazes me.. Once again I find myself adding you to my favorites.. for you are you know.. a favorite of mine.. xoxo

found this part especially vivid - but the whole poem is full of imagery - you set the stage so well and then.....the dose of reality - "missed it by that much"

Beautifully written melancholy... I'm staying away from lingering too much on the piece. You know I can always find something that grabs at old thoughts after reading this type of writing. You did good, my friend...

Oh, what graceful melancholy! I love how you described her raspberry grin, and my favorite stanza, I think, is:

Heavenly scent of magnolia bloom
Fresh as this hot summer’s fire
White opalescence in shades of the moon
Painting my soul with desire

I love poetry that tells a story, and this tells a sad, wistful one, quite beautifully. :)
