A God-Damned Shame

A God-Damned Shame

A Poem by Danny Mehmedi

A God-damned Shame

And the eldest neighbors among us

puffed at Paul Malls

Gathered in the courtyard around charcoal grills

lukewarm from the sun

in somber vigil

for the month's newest eviction

and to gossip about today's massacre

“A goddamned shame,”we called it

and the pot enviously noted

the kettle’s blackness

In a little black book

teeming with cliches

A goddamned shame

im not sure who’s

but whoever’s god he was

he turned shame into a curse

A god,

damned

A shame incomprehensible

The shame of a God,

damned…

To a charcoal hell

lukewarm from the summer sun

by elderly mortals

puffing Paul Mall’s
