Opposites Attract

Opposites Attract

A Poem by Jade Mayhew

His eyes are clear as icicles,
His hair so purely white,
A crooked grin to make girls swoon,
A smirk to cause men fright.
His skin's as light as sun-bleached bark
His voice can pierce the night.
His soul is drenched in darkness but
Is straining for the light.

He grew up knowing discipline;
He grew up knowing pain.
His father took the leather to
His back; his legs, a cane.
And while his mother stood aside,
His strength began to wane.
No love was dealt from either one.
His solace: sun and rain.

The elements were kind to him;
They never told him lies.
The sun would dry away his tears,
The rain disguised his cries.
The daytime helped his smile shine,
While night encased his sighs.
To wake up with the air still fresh
Felt like the grandest prize.

***

She woke up to her father and
Her mother at the door.
So blessed, she'd felt, for parents who
Would love her to her core.
She'd greet each day with a smile
And end each night with a snore.
Content and veiled in star-kissed dreams,
She couldn't ask for more.

She grew up knowing happiness;
She grew up knowing love.
Her parents got the world for her,
Even the stars above.
She knew they'd be there by her side
If push ever came to shove.
They helped to guide her down her path,
Her wings spread like a dove.

Her lips were bold like deep, red wine,
Her skin a golden tan.
A smile bright as winter's snow,
Her hair was blackened strands.
Her voice brought silence to the wind,
Her eyes were brown, like sand.
Her soul had known the light but now
The darkness held her hand.

***

He grew to be a bully and
The world had turned its back.
She was welcomed in with smiles, but
Her sanity was cracked.
The two were falling deeper down
To an abyss of black,
Until he saw his angel and
Her bad boy crossed her path.

Attraction instantaneous,
But a clashing of their pasts.
She was served on silver platters
While his scars still felt the lash.
She couldn't understand his pain;
His envy reared up fast.
They screamed, the fought, their hatred flared.
Then love... it bloomed, at last.

She finally saw the little boy
That grew into a man.
The horrors that he'd once endured,
The lifetime that it spanned.
And he saw the sheltered little girl
Who was never forced to stand,
Who never had the chance to fall:
Someone always held her hand.

He brought to life her wild side,
Just dying to burst out.
She taught him how to love again,
What compassion was about.
She helped him learn to laugh once more,
How to smile, play and pout.
He ignited fire in her heart,
Changed her whisper to a shout.

He showed the world his honest self
And proved it to be fact.
She shed the spoiled, naïve face
And wrote her riot act.
The diamond ring he gave to her
Revealed their loving pact
And proved to those who disagreed
That opposites attract.

I think it is a lovely poem, especially the way you weaved the two together. I was very content with the first section about the poem, lovely and then you continue on with your tale of love, I enjoyed very much, I do believe you prove that opposites attract. Writing love stories, usually so clique, and you have managed to do more and I very much enjoyed reading it. Thank you so very much. Very talented, you are. Keep writing!

I over how this piece could come together and diverge apart simultaneously. What a beautiful piece about love and pain and I love how you resembled that even those who seem to have it all together can in fact, be breaking down. Keep writing! :)

i like your use of color for separation and the theme, the different lives converging and the random beauty of life.
