Not of the Damned

Not of the Damned

A Poem by JC

In a worldly sense, us westerners are like royalty
living in a kingly bubble,
we criticize and make assumptions
on how things should be done
with utopian eyes and
scenes of moral glory
and smiling faces....

we fail to realize
that life is dirty
complicated
and corrupt....

you visited a third world country and
now you think you know the reality...
but just because you ventured out
and spent some time
on the streets of the damned
doesn't make you damned as well...

I really like pieces of realization like this. Of course everyone in a first world country is aware of the issues in the third world, but it doesn't become real until you see and experience it for yourself. It's easy to fall asleep in your comfy bed and warm house to forget about the rest of the world.
A great message :)

Very well driven point.
You can't just walk in someone's shoes, you have to wear their skin and carry their heavy hearts too.

There are quite a few things I am going to keep to myself because I don't find a review is the place. Overall I like your poem and find it interesting especially the point of view. I really liked the phrase 'with utopian eyes'. I was also wondering if this was suppose to be about a missionary or not?

I was telling my sister just this past weekend of my time visiting Monrovia, Liberia, of walking
thru the crowded streets, eating fish soup, dancing to James Brown records in a nightclub
called "The Cave". The images I saw on the news was of a country in a grip of human misery
with ebola taking such a unpredictable human toll. We do live in a sort of bubble here,
creating our joys, masquerading our bliss, hoping that the only dirty world we see is
on CNN..

good work Jason, dana.
