WhoAm "I"

WhoAm "I"

A Poem by John Ciarmello

                        Who Am I

“Who am "I?"

Six letters set separately in a row to make three words?

"I" being the smallest?

Yet, In the “I’s” mind it defines galaxies of possibilities with mountains of restraints.

How does this microscopic letter hold so much power?

“I” pondered hopelessly over "I.".

“I” wrote and rewrote, erased and added “I” to the yellow pages of collective thought;

until “I” became normal and simplistic.

And when this Monster’s breathing slowed to near death.

when

“I”

stood alone.

When

“I”

went still.

It detached the now.

It released the future.

It uncomplicated the past.

So, are we prisoners of this written letter? As socially purposeful as “I” may seem.

Do we salivate over its promises of achievement?

Do we frighten ourselves with its definitions of failure?

Do we clone people’s lives on its words of law?

Its books of romance?

Its tattered pieces of recorded History?

Have we witnessed travesties of the innocent because our "I"'s are not theirs?

and their "I"'s are not ours.

Have we become Its masterpiece of tall tales?

Its beveled meanings of ill-advised redirect.

Have we believed Its lies?

Have we rejected its truths?

With all the later in place there’s really only one unasked question:

Who are YOU?

Will your answer be: “I” am me?

Will you be ruled by a letter you've so carelessly defined to, be you?

Will you be ruled by this microscopic imposter?

that if allowed,

will chart your life with the blink of an

  "I."

nice play on words....made me think of the Moody Blues..."i think, therefore i am"
and when we do concentrate more on the "you" i think the i might seem smaller...but also think a "we" is much more powerful.

'Have we witnessed travesties of the innocent because our "I"'s are not theirs? and their "I"'s are not ours'.
Take every war, skirmish, engagement, disagreement, argument and so on and so forth.
Very good Line.

I am that I am. Nothing more need be said, for every word of that sentence can stand by itself.
