Loyalty

Loyalty

A Story by Jacob Dzik
"

A man's loyalty is tested by his boss.

"

The day I killed my best friend, I almost got myself killed. I got a text from the boss

telling me to be in his office in half an hour. When you get a message from the boss himself,

this is never a good sign. I got there in fifteen minutes and knocked on his door. It was opened

by Louis and he stood aside to let me in. The boss was behind his desk and smoking a cigar.

“Billy my boy”, he said, “take a seat.”

I sat down but didn’t say anything. You never opened your mouth to the boss unless he told

you to speak.

“We’ve been having some problems with Chucky, and I’m gonna need you to take care of him.

I want it done within the hour.”

Just like that. No reason why. That’s just how things worked.

“Understand?” The boss asked.

The boss knew Chucky was my best friend, this is why he picked me.

“What did Chucky do?” I said.

“I’m sorry, are you asking me to explain myself to you?”

“No, it’s just he’s my best friend.”

“Well then, we need to see where your loyalty lies.”

I sat there for a second and didn’t say anything. There was no way to get out of this but I knew

I was going to try and find a way.

“Listen, maybe we can talk to Chucky and just put a little scare into him. I’m sure he didn’t

mean whatever it is that happened.”

The boss shook his head like he was dealing with a child and snapped his fingers. The next

thing I knew Louis grabbed me by the throat and pulled me out of the chair and threw me to

the ground. I tried to get up and he stomped on my chest. He lifted up my shirt and carved a

small x into my chest with a knife. I let out a squeal. The boss got up and walked over to me.

“I’m not gonna repeat it again” he said. “You know what I’ve told you to do. You have one hour.

If it’s not done by then, your family will receive a package every day of a different body part.

Now get out of here.”

When I got to Chucky’s I knocked on the door. It felt like an eternity for him to open it when in

reality it was just a couple of seconds.

“Billy! How’s it going? Come on in.”

Those were the last words he ever said to me. When he turned around, I followed him in, pulled

out the gun, and put two bullets in the back of his head. He fell down and blood pooled around

him. I wiped a tear from my cheek, went to my car and drove to tell the boss it was done.

Again, I'm just trying to find my voice and work on my writing. Not perfect and can use a lot of work and maybe one day I'll come back to this and do something with it. I REALLY APPRECIATE anyone who reads. Thank you!
