The World Today

The World Today

A Poem by Audrey Bruckner

The world we live in today

isn't quite the way it used to be

children used to have dreams

of playing on professional sports teams

now children dream of living past fifteen

and try to deal with their low self-esteem

children are being killed by mothers and fathers

and a murderers bail is just $10,000

teenagers are doing drugs

and becoming thugs

everyday one more grave must be dug

suicide videos involving five year old kids

dying because of what their country did

people harming themselves because they're going through hell

quickly turn on someone else

everywhere you hear of someone being shot

whether in a home, a school, or a parking lot

a cry in the night as an intruder enters a home

and a sixteen year old is there all alone

now tell me how is this country the land of the free

when there are bars on the windows of every house you see

so i have a question that i would like to give

where is the world in which we used to live?
