Life's Roulette

Life's Roulette

A Poem by Audrey Bruckner

Life's roulette

spinning chaotic

the number called

no winning matter

hearts in turn

dramatized by luke warm lies

slide slowly in and out

jumping restless for normal

into hectic dealings

while branding the calendar

without knowledge

with what's meant to be

lonely a wish

from forked tongues

and caressed egos

gently granted

and sighed away

cautioned by the great

though some paths

are too deep to escape

thus into the locked desk drawer

goes resulting emptiness

learning quickly why streams run slowly

over hills and off cliffs, uncontrolled

quickly find the balance

between guilt and approval

find acceptance

just around the corner of denial

try true strength

in the place of unrelenting bravado

find shelter

in hostile land

and follow each gleaming piece of hope

among the stars
