A Prayer

A Prayer

A Poem by Fergie
"

My attempt at a villanelle

"

Dear God, save us from those who wish us ill
Now hate has filled their hearts and minds. It seems
We lost our way the day the earth stood still.

The world has watched the radicals who kill
All for a faith that preaches of extremes.
Dear God, save us from those who wish us ill.

Fear has been forged and moulded to their will
To pave the way for wars of jingoes’ dreams.
We lost our way the day the earth stood still.

Intolerance now spreads from those who fill
Their worlds with sin and with Your name blaspheme.
Dear God, save us from those who wish us ill.

Give us the strength to remember goodwill
And fix a world we’re tearing at the seams.
We lost our way the day the earth stood still.

In prayer I wait, compelled to watch until
You hear our plea. And so ‘til then I’ll scream,
Dear God! Save us from those who wish us ill!
We lost our way the day the earth stood still.

I had to look up villanelle being a novice in the world of poetry and if all students wrote like that, I can see why someone would choose to be a professor of English.
