Abandoned Princess

Abandoned Princess

A Poem by jenna

A princess abandoned

With a book balanced upon her head

In hopes she’ll be removed

From the dreaded tower

But the book falls

Time and time again

Until a kind man

Encourages her to try again

At last she is chosen

Where she’s brought to a home

Plentiful in love and security

A family with the kind man as her father

And teaches her that life’s not always a fairytale

Life has its ups and downs

Like a bump in the road

Taking someone you love away

Or the poignant sting of a paper cut

She’s distraught like a fallen book

But her dad is there to pick her up

And remind her she’s not alone

Life has its ups and downs

But can be magical

As stories can be brought to life

On a stage before her

Leaving her mesmerized

That she doesn’t acknowledge her father

As she sits upon his lap

Or as she spins

In a pink glittered ball gown

Surrounded by the love and support

From those she calls family

As the man watches the princess

Who’s grown into a version of himself

Life isn’t always a fairytale,

As he “can’t promise to be here

For the rest of her life,

But he can promise

To love her for the rest of his”.

And she will always be

The princess he picked up a book for

And encouraged her to try again

But with the lessons he taught,

The love he gave

And the way he lived for others.

Sounds like a word of gratitude for an adoptive family. The speaker seems to have developed insight and an appreciation of good fortune. Ironically, many do not develop such an appreciation for the blood relations who have always been there for them. Nicely done.
